1875 Trade Dollar. Type I/II. MS-63 (PCGS).
Endearing Choice Mint State quality for this key date entry in the circulation strike trade dollar series. Frosty in finish and otherwise brilliant, iridescent reddish-russet highlights cling to the protected areas around many of the design elements. The strike is universally full from the rims to the centers, and the in hand appearance is pleasingly smooth. While by 1875 the trade dollar had proven its worth in overseas commerce, the Philadelphia Mint produced just 218,200 circulation strikes that year. That facility's location on the far side of the country from popular embarkation ports in California probably contributed to the size of the mintage. Indeed, with so few chopmarked examples known, the 1875 seems to have seen only limited overseas circulation with many examples likely being used in domestic commerce. Mint State examples are scarce, and most are of the Type I/II hub combination, as here. A find for the advanced trade dollar enthusiast.
