Military Medals
"1814" Brigadier General Eleazer W. Ripley Medal. By Moritz Furst. Julian MI-19. Bronzed Copper. MS-64 BN (NGC).
65 mm. Beautiful reddish-brown patina blankets both sides of this smartly impressed, satin to modestly semi-reflective example. A few wispy handling marks are all that seem to preclude an even higher numeric grade. Due to numerous delays for reasons that included Ripley's refusal to furnish a profile portrait of himself and dispute over his part in the two battles of Erie fought in 1814, the dies for this type were not finished until 1836, with the gold medal finally struck in March of 1838.
