Indian Peace Medals
1885 Canada Service Medal. Northwest Canada. Silver. Mackay-134. About Uncirculated.
35.9 mm. 544.8 grains. Obv: veiled and crowned bust of Victoria, left. Rev: NORTH WEST // 1885 / CANADA within wreath. Original hanger and ribbon, but the pin bar is lost. Edge inscription effaced. Attractive light gray patina with soft accents of gold and pale blue in the recesses. Issued to those who participated in stopping the North-West Rebellion of the Metis people under Louis Riel. Certainly not a “peace medal” but undeniably related to Canada’s relations with her indigenous people.
