CANADA. Copper Vexator Canadiensis 1/2 Penny Token, 1811. PCGS GOOD-06 Gold Shield.
VC-3A1; Br-559. An uncommonly well detailed example of this classic piece of Canadiana. Some of the peripheral lettering on the obverse is discernible, as is the star at the bottom, and the portrait is fairly well outlined. On the reverse, the seated figure is complete and the date is plain with some of the peripheral letters discernible. The Chapman Brothers called a specimen of this variety "miserably struck and rude" in their 1884 Warner sale; that about covers it. The surfaces are pleasing and overall smooth medium brown, a few ancient pin scratches in the center of the reverse the only blemishes of note. Above average for this challenging type, and sure to see spirited bidding among specialists.
