Description

George VI (1936-52), gold proof Five Pounds, 1937, Coronation issue, bare head left, HP below neck for designer Humphrey Paget, Latin legend and outer border surrounding, GEORGIVS VI D:G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP:, rev. St. George and the Dragon right, date in exergue, B.P. to upper right of exergue for designer Benedetto Pistrucci, edge plain (Schneider 670; Hill T46; L&S 1; WR 435; Bull EGC 1454; S.4074). Hairlines in fields with a patch of heavy scratching below reverse tail hinting at a possible spot removal, otherwise about as struck.

The Latin legend translate as "George the Sixth by the grace of God, King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India."

These plain edge Proof gold Five Pounds were produced to celebrate the Coronation of King George VI on the 12thMay 1937 as part of gold Proof sets, with a mintage of 5,501 pieces, they were technically patterns as they did not have a milled edge like other gold Sovereigns.
