Victoria (1837-1901), gold Sovereign, 1863, 63 higher than 18 in date with open 6, second young head left, W.W. incuse on truncation for engraver William Wyon, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, laurel wreath surrounding, emblems below, no die number, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:, edge milled, 8.00g (Bentley 96; Marsh 46; MCE 524; S.3852D). A superb example with minimal circulation wear, graded by NGC as MS63+. We note that of 327 examples of all varieties at NGC, just 6 are graded higher.

Calendar year mintage 5,921,669.

The Latin legends translate as on obverse as “Victoria by the Grace of God,” and on the reverse as “Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith.”
