Commonwealth (1649-60), silver Shilling, 1654, initial mark sun, English shield within laurel and palm branch, legends in English language, THE. COMMONWEALTH. OF. ENGLAND, rev. English and Irish shields, value .XII. above, beaded circle and legend surrounding, date at top, legend surrounding, .GOD. WITH. VS., 6.06g (ESC 990; Bull 137; N.2724; S.3217). Weak at centre both sides of strike and wear, otherwise toned almost very fine.

The coins of the Commonwealth period are the first British coins to have legends in plain English.
