Description

Sudan, Khartoum, banknote, 1000 Piastres, 1884 (S.107a). Very rare, graded by PCGS as Choice New 63 (Minor stains).

PCGS Certification 80675429.

Colonel Charles “Chinese” Gordon was overrun by the Mahdi while waiting for support from the queen after having been sent to evacuate British citizens from the region. The Sudanese defenders were compensated in notes that were personally signed and backed by Gordon. Later, the notes were signed by hectograph.
