Description

AU58 Victoria (1837-1901), gold Half Sovereign, 1887, Jubilee type crowned bust left, J.E.B. initials on truncation for engraver Joseph Edgar Boehm, J.E.B. initials close together raised on truncation with hooked J, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, date below either side of bottom of frame, legend commences lower left with toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: edge milled, 3.99g (DISH L507 R7; Marsh 478A; S.3869A). Some more pronounced scratches in obverse field, otherwise very fine with lightly reflective lustre, has been graded by NGC AU58 and currently the only known example of highest rarity.

NGC Certification 5880746-027.

This coin with its hooked J type J.E.B. arrangement was predicted to exist by David Iverson and was recently discovered at Sovereign Rarities in London. This coin featured in the Coin News Magazine “Sovereign Update” in the February 2021 edition of the magazine by Steve Hill.
