Description

OTTOMAN TUNIS
Mustafa III (1171-1187ah / 1757-1774ce)
Lot of 9 small copper coins: different denominations and sultans f-vf, all are very rare a. bourbine [11]62ah(?)
b. 2 burbe 1173ah
c. burbe 1174ah
d. burbe 1175ah
e. burbe 1176ah
f. burbe [1]177 (possibly a contemporary forgery)
g. burbe 1180ah
h. burbe “1175” (possibly a contemporary forgery because “Mahmud” is written in a most unusual manner) All of the coins in the above lot pose several puzzling questions, to say the very least. The names of the denominations are tentatively based on references found in Valentine (12-14), Fenina (114-122 et passim) as well as Krause-Mishler (55-56). The weight of each coin varies between 0.51g and 0.85g. After having examined the lot firsthand, Prof. Fenina discovered several important omissions and asserted that there seem to have been errors already found in the production of the dies. Undoubtedly, more research is needed.
