Description

★ Rare Variant Type ★

Calabria, Tarentum AR Nomos. Circa 215-212 BC. Xenokrates, magistrate. Bearded strategos on horse walking to left, wearing short tunic and chlamys, raising right hand in salutation, parazonium under left arm; ΞΕΝΟΚΡΑΤΗΣ below, monogram above / Wreathed Taras seated astride dolphin to left, naked but for chlamys raised in left hand, trident over right shoulder; waves below, [T]APAΣ to left. Cf. Vlasto 955-958, HN Italy 1058, and SNG ANS 1259 (all with pileos on obv. and monogram and cuttlefish on rev., absent here); HGC 1, 904. 6.56g, 21mm, 3h.

Good Extremely Fine; wonderfully sharp and well detailed, lightly toned with underlying lustre. An apparently unique variety.
