Description

Divus Claudius II Gothicus. Died AD 270. Æ Fractional Follis 18 mm. 3.3 gm. Siscia mint. Struck under Constantine I, AD 317-318. Obv: DIVO CLAVDIO OPTIMO IMP, laureate and veiled head right. Rev: REQVIES OPTIM-ORVM MERITORVM, Divus Claudius seated left on curule chair, raising hand and holding scepter; SIS. RIC VII 43 (R3). Constantine asserted that he was descended from Claudius Gothicus, forming the basis for his claim to have the right to rule over an undivided empire.
