Description

★ Unpublished Dynastic issue ★

Philip I. AD 244-249. Æ Sestertius 28 mm. 22.4 gm. Rome mint, 2nd officina. 5th emission, AD 246. Obv: IMP IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev: IMP IVL PHILIPPVS CAES, Bust of Philip II, bare, draped and cuirassed, right. RIC -, similar to RIC 197a, but without the COS II in the obverse legend and without the laureate on Philip II. Unpublished and possibly unique. This sestertius (medallion, due to the absence of the S C?) certainly preceded the similar RIC 197a, being issued sometime between Philip's arrival in Rome in July 244 and his elevation of his son to Augustus in late 247.
