Description

★ Important Dynastic Type ★

SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS (193-211). Gold Aureus. Rome.

Obv: SEVERVS PIVS AVG P M TR P VIIII.
Laureate head of Septimius right.
Rev: FELICITAS / SAECVLI.
Draped bust of Julia Domna facing, between draped and cuirassed busts of Caracalla, laureate, and Geta, bare-headed.

RIC 175; Calicó 2589b.

Ex Fritz Rudolf Künker GmbH 288 (2017), lot 679. Very rare and important dynastic series. This type of reverse is only found on aurei, presenting one of the earliest examples of a frontal bust. The portrait of Julia Domna between the busts of Caracalla and Geta recalls the empress's attempt to reconcile the two quarrelsome successors. After Septimius' death in AD 211 at Eburacum during an expedition to Britannia, these efforts were soon in vain. Geta was in fact killed on 27 February 212 and Caracalla remained the sole ruler of the empire

Condition: Near extremely fine; some repairs (see original state at Künker).

Weight: 7.19 g.
Diameter: 20 mm.
