Description

★ CORNELIA SUPERA ★

CORNELIA SUPERA (Augusta, 253). Antoninianus. Rome.

Obv: COR SVPERA AVG.
Draped bust right, wearing stephane and set on crescent.
Rev: IVNONI AVG.
Juno seated left on throne, holding flower in right hand and infant cradled in left.

RIC 31 (Aemilian).

Very rare. Wife of Aemilianus, she is known only from coins and an inscription (Cuicul). She was proclaimed Augusta in AD 253. Her portrait is, in some issues, still rather academic, while in others it is characterised by a large aquiline nose, a hard mouth and an elongated, thin face that vaguely recalls her husband's features. As suggested by Bernoulli, we could possibly find her portrait in the Munich Glyptoteca, in a bust in the Torlonia Museum and one in Madrid

Condition: Good very fine.

Weight: 3.24 g.
Diameter: 22 mm.
