Description

IONIA. Ephesos. Cistophor. T. Ampius T.f. Balbus (Proconsul, 58-57 BC). Glykontis and Perikles, magistrate. Dated year 77 (58/7 BC).

Obv: Cista mystica with serpent; all within ivy wreath.
Rev: T A - MPI T F / PRO - COS / ΓΛΥΚωΝΤΙΜ / ΠЄΡΙΚΛΗCЄΡ.
Bowcase between two serpents. Controls: to left, OZ (date) above EΦE; above, Apollo standing left, holding branch and resting elbow upon column to right; torch to right.

Stumpf 8; Meadows, Fides, -; Naville 10, lot 108 (which realized a hammer of £500); Rauch 95, lot 130 (which realized a hammer of €800).

On this example, the termination of the magistrates' names is clearly visible and unusual: Γλυκωντι-Μ and Περικλησ-ЄΡ. Very rare.

Condition: Good very fine.

Weight: 12.44 g.
