★ Unrecorded Stater in Samian Standard ★

IONIA. Samos? EL Stater (Circa 6th century BC). Light Samian Standard.

Obv: Lying hybrid beast with lion´s (?) body and human head; uncertain object (amphora? Murex shell? Flute?) close to head.
Rev: Large incuse with two field; one fiels with lens-strucured surface.

Unpublished in the standard references; cf. Kayhan 635; HGC 6,1167.

This interesting Stater might be connected to a series of smaller Samian electrum fractions struck in Samian-Euboeic standard (see reference). The obverse of these coins is showing a structure highliy resembling a simplified version of the depiction on this stater.

Condition: Good very fine.
