Below exergual line, display of military harness set on two steps: shield and crested helmet, cuirass between graves. Below the cuirass, [AΘΛA], Head of Arethusa left, wearing earring with pendant and beaded necklace; wavy hair bound in front with ampyx and caught up behind by net. Around, four dolphins swimming, the second makes dorsal contact with neck truncation., An extremely rare specimen of the Syracuse decadrachms, in an excellent state of preservation and with a splendid high relief! And with a magnificent cabinet patina!
The engraving on this coin is extremely fine and precise, with the superb quadriga on the observe and the horses appearing very elegant, as well as the portrait of Arethusa, the protective divinity of the city of Syracuse, whose features have been magnified by the engraver through her face and hairstyle,
One of the most important silver denominations in the Greek world, this specimen appears to be the creation of the engraver Kimon, active in Syracuse at the very end of the 5th century BC during the reign of the tyrant Dionysus I, While some engravers signed their work directly but discreetly, notably Evainetes, who was active at the same period and signed a panel worn by Nike, Kimon did not do so here,
Researchers have managed to identify Kimon's style despite this lack of signature, and have also attempted to attribute the issue of these exceptional coins to a specific event, as it was extremely rare to strike such denominations for a Greek city,
While the occasion cannot be clearly determined, it is fairly clear that it is linked to a military event, the weapons present in the exergue seem to be a figuration of this, accompanied by "AΘΛA", a word that refers to the lexicon of combat, of fighting in ancient Greek, This association recalls a well-known practice, when the Greeks dedicated their military equipment to the gods following military victories by engraving them,

Morgan., Quadrige courant à gauche conduit par un aurige, tenant les rênes et un kentron, couronné par une Niké volant à droite ; à l’exergue, trophée d’armes constitué d’une javeline, d’une cuirasse et d’un casque attique; en-dessous, [AΘΛA], Tête d'Aréthuse à gauche, portant une boucle d'oreille avec pendentif et un collier de perles ; cheveux ondulés attachés devant avec un ampyx et retenus derrière par un filet. Autour, quatre dauphins nageant, le second ayant un contact dorsal avec la troncature du cou., Un spécimen des décadrachmes de Syracuse extrêmement rare, dans un excellent état de conservation et un haut relief tout à fait splendide ! Et avec une magnifique patine de médailler !
Cet monnaie est d'une grande finesse dans sa gravure, d'une grande précision avec notamment ce superbe quadrige au droit avec les chevaux dégageant une grande élégance, mais aussi le portrait d'Aréthuse, la divinité protectrice de la cité de Syracuse, dont les traits ont été magnifiés par le graveur à travers son visage comme sa coiffure,
L'un des plus importantes dénominations en argent du monde grec, cet exemplaire semble être issu du travail du graveur Kimon, actif à Syracuse à la toute fin du 5ème siècle av, J,C sous le règne du tyran Dionysos I, Si certains graveurs signaient directement, mais discrètement leurs œuvres, notamment Evainètes, actif à la même période, qui signe sur un panneau portés par la Nike, Kimon ici ne l'a pas fait,
Les chercheurs ont réussis à identifier le style de Kimon malgré cette absence de signature, et ont aussi cherché à attribuer la frappe de ces monnaies exceptionnelles à un événement précis car il était extrêmement rare de frapper de telles dénominations pour une cité grecque,
Si l'occasion ne peut être clairement déterminé, il est assez clair qu'il est relié à un évènement militaire, les armements présents à l'exergue semblent en être la figuration, accompagnés de "AΘΛA", mot qui renvoie au lexique du combat, de la lutte en grec ancien, Cette association rappelle une pratique connue, quand les grecs dédiaient leurs équipements militaires aux dieux à la suite de victoires militaires en les gravant,
Rappelons enfin que ces dénominations étaient frappées de manière très exceptionnelle par les cités grecques, à l'occasion de projets très important, qui nécessitaient un apport de fonds très conséquent comme par exemple la construction ou à la rénovation de bâtiments publics, l'achat de denrées ou un financement militaire, Cette monnaie a une valeur aussi bien pécuniaire qu'historique de la plus haute importance,
