Description

SICILY. Messana. 420-413 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.28 g, 12 h). ΜΕΣΣΑΝΑ The Nymph Messana, wearing long chiton and holding whip in her right hand and the reins in both, driving biga of mules to right; in exergue, two opposed dolphins. Rev. ΜΕΣ-ΣΑ-ΝΙ-Ο-Ν Hare springing to right; below, dolphin swimming to right. Caltabiano 519 (D207/R216). SNG Copenhagen 400 ( same dies ). SNG Lockett 826 ( same dies ). SNG Munich 654. Lightly toned, well-struck and very attractive. Traces of overstriking, otherwise, extremely fine.
