Description

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 360 BC. Nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.56 g, 1 h). Head of Hera Lakinia three-quarters facing, turned slightly to the right, wearing stephane ornamented with palmettes. Rev. ΚΡΟ[ΤΩΝΙΑΤΑΝ] Youthful Herakles seated to left on a rock draped with his lion's skin, holding a one-handled cup in his right hand and resting his left on his club; below, bow. Basel 198. HN III 2167. SNG ANS 371. SNG Lloyd 616. SNG Oxford 1521-1522. Beautifully toned and with a splendid obverse. Struck on an oblong flan with the result that figure of Herakles on the reverse has no head (!), otherwise, extremely fine.
