Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 272-240 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 6.61 g, 12 h), Nikylos. ΝΙΚΥΛΟΣ The Dioscouri, wearing peaked helmets and cloaks, on horses cantering to right. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding side-saddle on dolphin to left, holding kantharos in his right hand and trident in his left; to right, ΑΡ. Evans VIII O, 1. HN III, 1046. SNG Paris 2052. Vlasto 935-7. Rare. With a particularly lively scene of the Dioscouri. Very slightly weakly struck, otherwise, extremely fine.
