Description

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.20 g, 12 h), Damascus, 330-320. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on backless throne, holding eagle in his right hand and long scepter in his left; to left, ΑΡ Χ; below throne, between struts, five globules in the form of a Λ; below bottom strut, ΔΑ. Price 3200 var ( four globules ). Attractive and bright. A very rare early issue from Damascus, especially with the five globules under throne. Nearly extremely fine.
