Description

Alexius I Comnenus, 1081-1118. Aspron Trachy (Electrum, 28 mm, 3.92 g, 6 h), First coinage, Constantinople, 1082-1087. +IC XC Christ seated facing on a throne with a back, nimbate with pellet in each arm, wearing tunic and colobium, raising his right hand in benediction and holding Book of Gospels in his left. Rev. +AΛEΞIΩ ΔEC-ΠOT' TΩ KM Half-length bust of Alexius facing, wearing loros, jewelled chlamys, and crown with pendilia, holding labarum-headed scepter in his right hand and globus cruciger in his left. DOC 2a. SB 1893. Well centered. Some flatness, as usual, otherwise, very fine.
