Hostilian, as Caesar, 250-251. Aureus (Gold, 20 mm, 3.73 g, 6 h), Rome, 251. C VALES (sic!) HOSTIL MES QVINTVS N C Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Hostilian to right. Rev. PRINCIPI IV - VENTVTIS Prince, in military dress, standing left, holding baton in his right hand and spear in his left. Biaggi 1406 ( same dies ). Cohen 37 var. (VALENS). Calicó 3318 ( but misdescribed ). de Sartiges 343 ( same dies ). Mazzini 37v ( same dies ). RIC 181a ( but misdescribed ). Same dies as Nomos 16 (2018), 203. Extremely rare, perhaps only the third known example. Obverse slightly off center; some edge scrapes and possibly once mounted, otherwise, very fine.
