KINGS OF ARMENIA. Tigranes the Younger, 77/6-66 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 14.5 mm, 2.34 g, 12 h), first series, Tigranokerta, 77/6-72 BC. Diademed and draped bust of Tigranes the Younger to right, wearing five-pointed Armenian tiara decorated with comet. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ TIΓPANOY [ΔHMO] around tripod. ACV -. CAA -. Kovacs 131 var. Cf. 96 for similar reverse die. An interesting variation of a very rare type; sharp surfaces. Some corrosion on the fields, otherwise, nearly very fine.
From the collection of Yerets’ Kariatin, Switzerland.
This is a problematic issue. The coin looks very close to Kovacs 96 assigned to Tigranes II but the portrait is definitely not of Tigranes the Great but preferably of his son Tigranes the younger. The style of the reverse now, is particularly different from the Kovacs 131 and 157 so it is possible that it was struck not in Tigranokerta but in some other mint.
