Description

IONIA. Kolophon. Circa 450-410 BC. Drachm (Silver, 15.5 mm, 5.45 g, 1 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right, wearing a beaded necklace. Rev. Six-stringed kithara within a shallow incuse square. Milne, Colophon 20. SNG von Aulock 2000. Traité II, 2, 1897 and pl. CLIII, 6. Weber 5806 ( same dies ). A splendid example with a fine archaizing head of Apollo, nicely toned. Some minor surface roughness, otherwise, good very fine.

Property of a Late Collector, ex Tradart 8 November 1992, 105, Bank Leu 48, 10 May 1989, 229 and Hess - Leu 45, 12 May 1970, 267.

The Apollo heads on the drachms of Kolophon are often, as here, of truly fine style, often reminiscent of those from Leontinoi and Katane.
