Description

ATTICA. Athens. Circa 510-500/490 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 17.01 g, 7 h). Head of Athena to right, with the hair over her forehead shown in wavy curls, wearing a disc earring and an Attic helmet ornamented with a small spiral on the bowl and with its crest supported by a dotted zig-zag holder. Rev. Α-⦿-Ε Owl, with folded wings, standing to right, head facing; in the upper field to left, slim olive twig with two leaves and a fruit; the legs of the Α opposite the top of the owl's head; all within an incuse square. Cf. Seltman 194 and pl. IX, A 131/P 150. Cf. Svoronos, Trésor pl. 4 passim, especially 7 and 33-34. A very attractive, toned, and very well-centered, with most of the crest showing. Traces of corrosion, otherwise, good very fine.
