Anonymous, 11th century. Seal (Glass, 21 mm, 2.90 g). MHP - ΘOY The Virgin standing facing, nimbate and orans; to right, palm branch. Rev. Blank. Cf. miliaresia of Constantine IX Monomachus (SB 1834) and miiaresion fractions of Constantine X Ducas (SB 1851-1852) for a very similar depiction of the Virgin. A rare and interesting example of a Byzantine seal impression in glass rather than on a lead bulla. Maybe it has to be understood as a token of sorts. Very rare and interesting! Very fine.
