Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 17.23 g, 9 h), circa 478-472. Quadriga walking to right, with a bearded charioteer; above, Nike flying to right and crowning horses. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ ( first Σ in retrograde ) Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair tied in a krobylos; around, four dolphins swimming to right. Boehringer 229. Dewing 737. Jameson 744. Toned. Some porosity on obverse, and collection sticker on reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From a Swiss collection formed in the 1960s.
