Description

MACEDON. Thessalonica. Gordian III, 238 -244. Triassarion (Bronze, 25 mm, 9.09 g, 7 h), c. 241-244. ΑΥ Κ Μ ΑΝΤΩNIOC ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟC Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΘЄCCΑΛΟΝΙΚЄΩΝ ΝЄΩΚΟΡΩΝ / ΠΥ-ΘΙΑ Four legged table, shown in perspective and with the legs ending in lions' claws, bearing five apples, a prize crown containing a palm branch, a purse and three coins; below table, a two-handled vase. RPC VII.2 414. Touratsoglou 382-383. Extremely rare, the finest of the three known specimens. With a dark tan patina. Both sides off-struck and with some striking flatness and scrapes, otherwise, good very fine.
