Description

SICILY. Selinos. Circa 515-480/70 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 8.40 g, 5 h). Wild parsley leaf. Rev. Wild parsley leaf within a linear square; all within an incuse square. Arnold-Biucchi 9. BMC 12. SNG Fitzwilliam 1156. SNG Lloyd 1211-12. SNG Lockett 858. Very rare. Nicely-centered, toned and well-struck. About extremely fine.

The city of Selinus used a leaf of wild parsley, selinon in Greek, as its badge - a typical example of the way Greek states used what are known as punning types to identify themselves on their coinages. Another example is the seal, Phoke, on the coinage of Phokaia.
