Description

SICILY. Segesta. Circa 475/70-455/50 BC. (Silver, 21.5 mm, 8.66 g, 12 h). ΣΕΓΕΣΤΑ-ΖΙΒ ( retrograde ) Hound standing to right, his head lowered on the scent; in the exergue, tendril. Rev. Head of the nymph Aigeste to right, her hair bound in a chignon that is bent up and tied at the back of her head by a wide hair band; her head is just enclosed in a tight linear circle; all within a shallow, circular incuse . Buceti -. Hurter 58 (V18/R3, same dies ). Rare ( only the third example known from this die pair ). With a strong, almost masculine head of Aigeste. A perfectly centred and surprisingly attractive coin. About very fine.
