LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 440-430 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.44 g, 6 h). Five-grained ear of barley with leaf to left; in the field to right, cross-headed torch. Rev. [ΜΕΤΑ] Five-grained ear of barley with leaf to left; poppy plant with seed pod. HN III 1493 ( same dies ). Jameson 267 ( same dies ). Noe 321, Ward 41 ( same dies ). Very rare. Struck early in the sequence of Metapontine double relief staters. About very fine.
From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, ex Berk BorB 58, 28 June 1989, 97.
A truly very rare coin, but the original Berk ticket is remarkable for its inventiveness: "OTHER EXAMPLE in BERLiN NOE 321 2nd Recorded". Well, there are actually 3 other examples in Berlin out of a total of 6 cited by Noe (rather than the 2 cited by the Berk cataloguer). Weirdly enough, the reprint of Noe, produced by the ANS in 1984 (with extras by A. Johnston), lacks the page with both Noe 321 and 322 (it replaces them with a second listing of Noe 320),.
