CARIA. Knidos. Circa 449-411 BC. Hemitetartemorion (Silver, 5 mm, 0.12 g, 9 h). Head of a roaring lion to left. Rev. Head of Aphrodite to right, wearing a close fitting Lydian cap; behind her neck, barley grain; all within incuse square. Apparently unpublished and unknown ). Apparently unique. An astonishingly well-made, tiny coin. Toned. Slight roughness and a die break on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions and from the collection of L. Mildenburg, acquired from Münzen und Medaillen.
There can be no certainty that this coins comes from Knidos - Cahn didn't know of it and there is no record of it in the HN Online - but given the way the female head is depicted on the reverse, it is very likely the Knidian Aphrodite. Especially since Dr Mildenberg seems to have gotten it from Dr. Cahn at M&M a Knidian origin would be most appropriate!
