MACEDONIA OR WESTERN ASIA MINOR. uncertain. early to mid 5th century BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 7 mm, 0.32 g). Head of a bull to right, with a beaded neck truncation and a sharp, straight horn. Rev. Irregular quadripartite incuse square. Unpublished ?, but for similar pieces, see SNG Kayhan 1515 ( Ionia, hemiobol ), Pecunem 8, 2013, 156 ( Karia, hemiobol ), and CNG e362, 2015, 136 ( but these pieces look slightly earlier stylistically than our piece ). Very rare. A particularly attractive piece, far nicer than all other known examples of the type. Toned. Slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, and from the collection of L. Mildenberg, bought privately from NFA (Malter) on 28 December 1976.
Frankly, the animal on the obverse seems to be a cross between a bull and a unicorn!!
