Plaquettepenning, or Hollow medal (Silver, 70mm, 68.86 g 12), on the death of Admiral Maarten Tromp at the Battle of Scheveningen, 10 August 1653; by Pieter van Abeele, with his signature on the obverse and his silver mark on the edge, Amsterdam, 1653. MART.HERP.TROMP.R.L.ADM.V.HOLL.E. WESTV. / A°1653. Bare-headed facing bust of Tromp; on the arm truncation, PVA ( ligate ) F; fields finely ornamented with crowned lyre-like plants; all within a laurel wreath. Rev. OBYT Æ 56 Helmeted shield bearing the Tromp arms, over two crossed anchors and with two rampant griffin supporters; below, scene of the sea battle. K. A.
