MODERN COINS
A SPECIAL COLLECTION OF DUTCH AND DUTCH RELATED MEDALS
The Dutch Republic. Zealand . Medal, cast (Silver, 61mm, 68.38 g 12), on the founding of the East India Company and the command of the sea, dated 1602 but made sometime around the 1660s. (rosette)IMPERATOR. MARIS.TERRÆ.DOMINVS (= ruler of the sea, lord of the land ) Ship sailing to left. Rev. LVCTOR.ET. EMERGO.1602. (= I struggle and rise from the waves ) Crowned shield bearing the arms of Zealand. Bizot, Dutch, p. 86, pl. 38. Van Loon I, - (but see p. 550 for a jeton with these types). Apparently very rare, and most attractively toned. Considerable traces of after-cast working and with polished fields, as expected with cast medals, never-the-less , extremely fine. Ex Schulman, 7 December 1908, 810. This medal, which is a solid cast, gives, however, every impression of being a two part cast united by a rim. Thus, it makes sense to see it as being a historical re-creation produced during the great period of prosperity that reigned in the Netherlands after the Peace of Westphalia.
