Description

GREEK COINS
IONIA
Miletos. Circa 340-325 BC. Drachm (Silver, 14mm, 3.61 g 1), Diagoras. Laureate head of Apollo to left. Rev. ΔΙΑΓΟΡΑΣ Lion standing left, his head turned back to right; above, 8-pointed star; to left, Miletos monogram; in exergue, magistrate’s name. Demeester 122 ( this coin ). Cf. Deppert 148 ( same obverse die ). A truly spectacular example of this issue, perfectly struck, beautifully preserved and finely toned. Good extremely fine. From the Falm collection, Numismatica Ars Classica 82, 20 May 2015, 188, privately purchased from Tradart in Bruxelles in 1996. Small denominations like this coin would have been in constant use since they would have served as a day’s pay for many types of workers. Thus, they are usually found worn, sometimes greatly so. A wonderful piece like this one is actually extremely rare.
