GREEK COINS
ATTICA
Athens. Circa 440s-430s BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24mm, 17.20 g 11). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with three olive leaves and palmette, round earring and pearl necklace. Rev. AΘE Owl standing to right, head facing the viewer; to left, olive sprig and crescent moon; all within incuse square. Agora 8. Dewing 1596 ff. Svoronos pl. 13, 21 ff. A well struck example of fine style. Some minor traces of die rust on the obverse, otherwise , good extremely fine. From a European collection formed in the 1990s. An interesting minor detail about this coin is the dot that appears in the field before Athena’s neck truncation: this is actually one of the pearls of her necklace, which the die cutter attempted to show in ‘pendant’ form.
