Pherai. Alexander, Tyrant, 369-359 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 15mm, 2.84 g 5). Youthful head of Jason to left, wearing petasos. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑ - ΝΔΡΕΙΟΝ Horse’s hoof and lower leg to right. BCD 1312 and Traité IV, 617, pl. CCXCIV, 18 ( same dies? ). Extremely rare. Well centered and attractive. Slightly rough, crystallized surfaces, otherwise , good very fine. From a European collection, formed before 2005. This is one of the most beautiful coins produced in Thessaly: the wonderful BCD example was fought over to such extent that it brought the astounding price of CHF 155,000.- Of course, the present coin is in much lesser condition, but the beauty and rarity remain the same.
