Description

GREEK COINS
THESSALY
Peirasia. Early to mid 4th century. Obol (Silver, 12mm, 0.86 g 7). Youthful male head to left, wearing taenia. Rev. ΠΕΙ - [ΡΑ-ΣΙ-ΕΩΝ] Warrior advancing left, seen from behind, nude but for his helmet, with shield over his left arm and a couched spear held in his right. Pendleton O2 (O2/R2, these dies ). Rare. With a reverse of outstanding stylistic elegance. Usual rough surfaces, otherwise , good very fine. From a European collection, formed before 2005. The artistry of the engraving of the reverse die used for this issue is in many ways quite astounding! In fact, it is quite spectacular and is reminiscent of the best full-sized sculpture of the period.
