Description

CELTIC COINS
GAUL
Ambiani . 2nd century BC. Stater (Gold, 21mm, 7.44 g 11). Celticized head of Apollo to left, with elaborate and extensive hair. Rev. Celticized biga driven by Nike to left; star and ornaments in field, and a rosette-like device and two pellets-in-annulets below; in exergue, zig-zag pattern. Depeyrot 129. D&T 67. Van Arsdell 12-1. Very rare. Very fine. These Ambiani staters with their superb celticized heads, were among the first coins to circulate in Britain. They must have crossed the Channel through trade; by doing so they became the prototypes for the later coinage of the ancient Britons.
