Description

EPEIROS. Ambrakia. Circa 456-426 BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 8.22 g, 11 h). Pegasos with straight wings, flying to left; below, A. Rev. Head of Athena to left, wearing Corinthian helmet and with her long hair falling down the back of her neck; in the field to right, behind her neck, kantharos; all within a very broad and shallow incuse square. BMC 37 ( this obverse die ). Calciati 12. HGC 3.1, 199. Ravel, Ambrakia, 27 (A17/R15). Very rare, with a single example known to Ravel, once in his collection. With a splendid Classical head of Athena of great charm. Obverse partially flat struck, otherwise, good very fine.
