This coin commemorates the victories of the moneyer’s supposed ancestor, L. Aemilius Paullus (in fact they were only vaguely related). The letters TER on the reverse refer to L. Aemilius Paullus’ three triumphs: in Spain in 190, Liguria in 181 and at the famous battle of Pydna in 168, when the Romans extinguished the independent Macedonian kingdom.
