The Triumvirs. Lepidus and Octavian. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.87 g, 10 h), military mint traveling with Lepidus in Italy, November-December 43 BC. LEPIDVS PONT MAX III V R P C Bare head of Lepidus to right. Rev. C CAESAR IMP III VIR R P C Bare head of Octavian to right. Babelon (Aemilia) 35, (Julia) 71. Cohen 2. Crawford 495/2a. RBW 1752. Sear Imperators 140. Sydenham 1323a. Woytek, Arma et Nummi p. 485-487 & 558 ( for date ). Die break and some striking weakness on obverse, reverse struck off centre and some porosity, otherwise, good very fine.
From a Swiss collection.
Crawford assumed that this type was issued by Lepidus in 43 BC. However, we consider Woytek's arguments for dating it slightly earlier to late-43 BC, as presented in Arma et Nummi p. 485-487, to be more convincing.
