KINGS OF CAPPADOCIA. Ariobarzanes I Philoromaios, 96-63 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16.5 mm, 3.98 g, 2 h), Mint A (Eusebeia under Mt. Argaios), year 25 = 71/0 BC. Diademed head of Ariobarzanes to right. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ APIOBAPZAN[OY ΦIΛOPΩMAIOY] Athena standing left, holding Nike in right hand, resting left on shield set on ground behind her; spear behind; to inner left, monogram; in exergue, [KE]. HGC 7, 846. Simonetta, Revision 48a. Toned; Obverse brockage on reverse. Crude as is typical for this year, otherwise, very fine.
Simonetta notes that while Ariobarzanes' drachms of year 25 are crudely struck and frequently have the date illegible (as is the case here) it is the only year to use this particular monogram.
