TROAS. Gergis. Circa 350-300 BC. (Bronze, 16.5 mm, 4.09 g, 12 h). Laureate head of the Sibyl Herophile facing, turned slightly to the right. Rev. ΓΕΡ Sphinx seated right; in exergue, grain ear to right. SNG Ashmolean 1146. Dark brown patina. Very fine.
The Sibyl Herophile is said to have lived at the time when Troy was destroyed and that she was the priestress of the Smintheum, the sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus. There she had predicted the destruction of Troy. Giovanni Boccaccio pics up the story of Herophile in his book on "Famous Women".
