Description

Euboia. Chalkis. Circa 180-146 BC. Octobol (Silver, 25 mm, 5.48 g, 11 h). Head of the nymph Chalkis to right, her hair in a roll and wearing a triple-pendant earring. Rev. [ΧΑΛΚΙ] / ΜΕΝΕΔΗ Eagle standing right with open wings; fighting a serpent, grasped in his talons, that coils around his left leg and rises up toward his chest. BCD 238 (same obverse die). Picard 1a (this coin cited). Locker Lampson 207 (this coin). Very rare. Very attractively toned. Struck on a slightly short flan with minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, extremely fine. From a Swiss collection, previously in the Wallace Collection and in that of G. Locker Lampson, Ars Classica XVI, 3 July 1933, 1175 = Ars Classica XII, 18 October 1926, 1391, and also from that of G. Philipsen, Hirsch XXV, 29 November 1909, 929.
