Description

Bruttium. Rhegion. Circa 415/0-387 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 17.35 g, 2 h). Lion’s mask facing. Rev. PHΓINON Laureate head of Apollo to right, with olive sprig behind. Herzfelder 86-89 variant. HN III 2496. A particularly attractive example, beautifully struck and lightly toned. Good extremely fine. From a European collection, acquired in the 1990s. This unusually fine piece is struck from a reverse die that was unknown to Herzfelder: the obverse is probably his D.54a, but the reverse, while similar to his R73, R 74 and R75, clearly differs from them and provides us with a strong and elegant head of Apollo. He has a refined and youthful look, without any hint of the coarse, child-like quality that appears on the later reverse dies, as R76-R87.
