Bruttium. The Brettii. 215-214 BC. Hemidrachm (Gold, 12 mm, 2.13 g, 5 h). Head of bearded Herakles to left, wearing lion's skin headdress; to left, below chin, tiny Γ; to right, club with head downwards. Rev. ΒΡΕΤΤΙΩΝ Nike driving biga galloping to right; below, tiny Γ and serpent coiled to right. Arslan AV 5-8. HN III 1953. Scheu G8. SNG ANS 15. SNG Lloyd 540. Very rare. Attractively toned and with a fine, miniature head of Herakles. Extremely fine. From the Ravenel Collection, USA, ex Tradart 8, Geneva, 16 November 1995, 17 and Bank Leu 33, 3 May 1983, 298, from the collection of V. J. E. Ryan, III, Glendining & Co., 24 November 1950, 1463, and ex Naville X, 15 June 1925, 118 (jointly owned by Hirsch and Tom Virzi; purchased at the sale by Forrer of Spink's for CHF 1 000 on behalf of Ryan).
